![]() ![]() We can, therefore, contrast the chorus in the Bacchae with that in, for example, the Ion, where the intense devotion of the chorus to their mistress leads them to disregard Xuthus' injunction of silence, and to reveal his plan to Creusa. Otherwise the chorus sings its odes and utters, at 263–5, 328–9, and 775–7, remonstrances or warnings derived from the vast store of Greek traditional wisdom which the chorus characteristically propounds. The chorus of the Bacchae participates directly in the action of the play at only two points: 604ff., and 1024ff. We can note at the outset that we must distinguish between the chorus as participants in the dramatic action, and the use of choral odes to treat important themes in the play. ![]() It is well to examine, however, the nature of the relevance of the chorus in this play, and its involvement in the action of the play. ![]() But in the Bacchae, the structure as a whole is more coherent than in other late plays, and the chorus plays an unusually important and integral part in the drama. The conventional treatment of the chorus in this play is particularly remarkable for the Euripidean choral odes had shown a tendency to become detached from the main concerns of the drama, to verge on becoming the ἐμβόλιμα associated with the successors of Sophocles and Euripides. The epithets used for him in cultic practice and in poetry often allude to his bullish form. It expresses the god's power, leadership, virility, and his potency as a force of nature. I n the Bacchae, the last work of his old age, Euripides reverted to a more archaic, more conventional, more Aeschylean type of drama. The bull is one of Dionysus's most common incarnations in Greek art and religious imagery. ![]()

I haven’t thought of this book in a very long time, although Robert Langdon continues to haunt over on Peacock. And from the post-release Vatican outrage–and the very divided opinions of the novel within my Catholic family-to sheer bonkers plot, this book was pure mess. However, Oliver’s rant reminds me why I appreciated The Da Vinci Code, even at a young age: I love mess. That is why in the prologue, after he shoots Sauniere and sees him in physical pain, he says to him. For him, physical pain is a constant reminder of Jesus’s suffering and of his own attempts to atone for his original sinand by extension, all of humankind’s. It’s, as a technical point, a bit underwhelming for a novel whose big reveal is that Jesus and Mary Magdalene got married and had a baby. (Not to show my allegiance too firmly, but National Treasure just did it better. Oliver is rightfully baffled that this is somehow a pivotal, very difficult puzzle at the center of the story.
